Study with functional variation

A variation in function should not be perceived as an obstacle to studying at university. Therefore, the university offers different types of support and help for you to be able to study on an equal footing with other students. The university has a coordinator of special educational support and she has her office at the student square in Eskilstuna and Västerås. Her contact details can be found in the side column.

Special pedagogical support

There is special educational support for those who have a lasting disability, such as dyslexia, ADHD or chronic diseases that affect your study situation. The support is designed individually based on your needs and can consist of, for example, note support, extended time on the exam, mentor or scanned literature. In order to receive the support offered, you must make an application online or contact the coordinator.

You start by making a digital application in NAIS, There you also upload certificates of your functional variation from, for example, a doctor, psychologist or speech therapist. You will then be invited to a meeting with a coordinator to discuss your individual need for support. The coordinator then writes a certificate with recommended support measures that you show to the teacher/examiner who decides on the recommended support measures based on the current syllabus.

The certificate you receive from the coordinator is limited in time and usually recommends various forms of support and adaptations for a specific course or course. You are responsible for contacting the coordinator to update the certificate.

When you start a new course or part, please introduce yourself to the teacher, tell the teacher what your needs are and present the certificate you have received from the coordinator. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. If you have any questions or if something is not working, please contact the coordinator.

Who can be supported?

In order to have special pedagogical support, you must be able to present an investigation or diagnosis made by a specialist in the current functional variation. Functional variation refers to reading and writing difficulties, dyslexia, and physical, mental or neurological disability.

You also need to apply for the support through  and have your application approved by the university coordinator for special pedagogical support.
