STUDENT LIFE

Eskilstuna

The Kår on Tour is for students in Eskilstuna that want to join in on fun activities together with other students in the city. We arrange for example pubs, movie nights, travels and contests.

Keep yourself up to date by likeing The Kår on Tour on Facebook. (You will find the page by clicking the picture).

Qårhuset, at smedjegatan 32, is where the student union is located in Eskilstuna.

In Qårhuset you can find the student unions expedition and the student unions offices.

On the first floor there is a large pentry and dining hall that is used for both studying, eating and partying. In the “kårlyan” we often have movie- and gaming nights and we also have a conference room and a storage for the programme associations.

The future for Eskilstuna

We are looking at different options for a new student union building, but we don’t have any dates for opening yet.

Västerås

The student union is located at Kårhuset (the red building at campus) and is the student unions restaurant business. It is run by students, for students. Kåren has a café, a pub and a night club with student friendly pricing and also discounts for members of the student union. Associations can also have sittings and association-pubs. An association-pub is a pub where the programme association decides the theme and arrange activites during the evening. Sometimes kåren offers special foods and drinks that go with the theme.

Café Kåren

Café Kåren is Kårens daily business. In the café you can buy the cheapest coffee on campus, baguettes or just sit down and study with your fellow coursemates.

Café Kårens opening hours:
Monday-Friday 8:30 – 15:30

Evening pub

The evening pub is Kårens evening business. At Kåren we have pub nights three times a week. About once a month we also open up the doors for the big hall for party with DJ:s, a big dancefloor and at least three bars. The Kårens parties often attract 500-900 people and are a big part of the students nightlife on campus in Västerås.

Get involved

There are a lot of different missions that you can apply for at Kårens business. The different missions are rewarded in different ways: some are payed, some are voluteer and others give special benefits. Some of the posts are rewarded by a VIP-card, this gives you 30% discount on everything you buy at Kåren and free entrance to all parties for you and a +1.

Caféassistant

Caféassistant is what we call the people who work in our café. Here we serve baguettes, sallads, coffee and “fika”. This mission is payed per hour, which makes it a great extra job and is easy to combine with your studies. The regular caféassistants work a certain amount of shifts a week and are rewarded with their own VIP-card, that is valid while they work. You can also work as an extra and fill for missing staff. Often then you work a couple shifts a month

Café manager

The café manager is the person in charge of the café. They make sure that caféassistants are hired and educated, they put up schedules and order supplies for the daily business. The mission is full time and one school year (10 months) and is usually announced at spring. While working the café manager is also rewarded with a VIP-card. After the full school year they are also rewarded with a permanent VIP-card.

Serving manager

The serving manager is resposible for the night business to work. They are on scene at nights, ordering food and setting schedules. They make sure that there are kårare for every night and that they are comfortable while at Kåren.

As the serving manager you get a lot of new experiences, not just in how to run a pub and night club but also in leaderchip and communication. These missions are for 20 hours a week, which makes it a great extra job. The serving managers usually are four people and they work for a year.

During the time a serving manager works they get the same benefits as they who have a VIP-card and when the year has passed they get a permanent VIP-card

Bar manager

The bar managers are responsible for the drink bar during nights. They mix drinks and sell shots. Bar managers work a couple of shifts a month and are rewarded with a VIP-card during the time they work. This card gives 30% discount on everything at Kåren and free entrance to the nightclub for them and a +1.

Kårare

Kårare are they who work voluntary at Kåren. They work night at Kårens pubs or nigh clubs. They help out in the kitchen, in the bar and with other tasks that needs to be done during the night. The kårare can choose freely what nights they want to work and sign up one night at a time. To kåra, as it’s called, is a good way to get to know new people and get professional experience. If you are interested in how a pub or night club works, you should apply to be a kårare!

Student terms

Here you will find some terms that are relevant for your time as a student at Mälardalen university.

Ovve culture

The ovve (student boilersuit) is a symbol for the student life. It follows along on events and “abroad” parties. The ovve is not to be washed, it carries all the good and the bad memories. The only way to wash the ovve is to wear it while bathing or showering. A lot of students collect different patches that show what adventures they’ve been on.

Rookie symbol

During the rookie period (introduction weeks) all new students wear a symbol that show what student programme they belong. This makes it easier for all the faddrar (the older students) to recognize the new ones and make sure that everyone have a great start for their studies

Lambo

Lambo is a drinking game where students call on another student to drink up while others sing. The song is ongoing for as long as the student is drinking. The game is voluntary and is just for fun and games.

Mascots

Every programme association has its own mascot. It often reflects the approach and culture that is in that specific association. During the rookie period the rookies are supposed to steal the mascots from other associations. If another rookie succeeds to steal your mascot, you often have to spexa (do some sort of funny performance) to get it back.
Sexmästeriet has a mascot called Nubbe, who is not up for grabs.

Ös culture

This is a culture that some associations have at Mälardalen university. It means that some specific people from the association will show up, mostly at the rookie period, often dressed in sunglasses and serious faces (and different clothes depending on the association). They mosty want to be left alone unless they themselves make contact.

Sitting

There are sittings that are both formal and casual. The casual sittings allow you to wear your ovve and the food is often simple, the formal sittings usually require suit and is a fine dining

Abroad party

Even though it’s called an abroad party, it’s not always abroad. Most of the time it means that it is in another city, for example Absolut Gotland and Syndafloden. At Mälardalen university the Gurkfejden and Eskilstuna Winter Games is arranged and students from other cities travel here to join.

Drinking games

Here you can read about popular drinking games and their rules. You can always join even if you don’t drink alcohol.

Beerpong

6 steady cups are placed in a triangular shape and are filled with optional liquid. You can play with one or two ping-pong balls per team. To settle who will start you play a round of rock paper siccors and the winner decides who will start.

When you throw the ball, either your hand or your elbow (depending on the size of the table) is not allowed to go passed the tables edge. From that the ball has touched the cup and until the ball has touched the liquid, you are allowed to blow in the cup to get the ball out. If you bounce the ball on the table before it hits the opposite players cup, you get points for two cups. BUT the other player is allowed to hit away the ball after the first bounce.

If you play with two balls and they both go into the same cup you also get point for two cups, plus you get to throw the balls again.

Depending on the table you can descide what to do with balls that roll back on the table. Usually if it does, and you are able to catch it before the other player you can throw the ball again with a trickshot, which is some sort of throw where you stile and make it harder for yourself. For example: throw under your leg, behind your back or bounce it against the wall. If you hit with a trickshot you get points for two cups.

If the player who started throwing wins (hits the last cup) the other player is allowed to play again since you both will have to play the same amount of rounds for it to count as a win. If the other player also hits your last cup, you will continue until someone wins the last round!

Caps

Get bottle caps without foil, big glasses, a lot of drinks of your own choise and a bunch of friends. Sit down in a circle with a legs width apart from the glasses that are standing in a circle in the middle. Every player fills one glass with their choise of drink. There is also one glass in the middle with a bit of everyones drink in.

The game is played like so that every player sits with their legs crossed and a bottle cap in their hand. The goal is to throw the cap in a optional glass. If you hit, the owner of the glass answeres with a return throw, if they miss they will drink and empty their glass.

Gas gas

Get a drink of your chosing, big plastic glasses, two ping-pong-balls and a bunch of friends. Fill all but two glasses with drinks and put them randomly across the table. All participants stand around the table. Two people on the opposite sides of the table start with one ping-pong-ball each and an empty glass.

You are going to try to bounce the ping-pong-ball once on the table and then in the glass. If you get it in the glass on the first try you can send your glass to whoever you want. If you miss on the first try, you send the glass to the person on your left once you succeed to hit. If you were to hit one of the glasses on the table with drinks in them you need to finish that drink before you continue the game. Your goal is to set your empty glass in the other empty glass and this can only happen if the person on your left has the other empty glass. If someone puts their empty glass in your empty glass you need to quickly take one drink from the table and finish it. After that you continue with that empty glass and the other stack of glasses goes to the person across the table. Don’t forget to play the song Gas Gas by Goran Bregovic while playing!

Treman

Step 1: Make sure to get some amount of drinks, anything works.

Step 2: Find someone who knows the game and join. Good luck learning.

Fia med punsch

Get a game of Ludo (the bigger the funnier). Change the game tokens to shotglasses or small glasses that fit on the board. Decide who goes first. Follow the rules of Ludo, but you drink what’s in your glass when you get pushed or if you finish with the token. Tokens that go to start are filled up again and join the game when the opportunity comes. The game is over when all drinks are empty.
