The Student Union, or Student Kåren is a central part of university life in Sweden. There is a long history of student politics and the union has the ability to influence in the school environment and in other areas of life. They provide a variety of valuable services for students, both socially and professionally.
The union's primary goal is to influence student
politics. They work to help you get what you
want and need at university. This may be by setting demands for
certain courses, or offering advice about educational problems.
They also open up a whole world of contacts for your future working
lives; with conferences and business presentation
days.
There is also the social side to
Students Kåren's work. When new
students come to the university they all face the same problem -
finding friends! Student Kåren ensures that all new students are
assigned a fadder, and that new International Students are
introduced to the International
Committee. The pub and restaurant is a great way to
help newcomers feel at home, meet new people and become an active
part of student life.
However, the best part of being a member of the
student union is that you receive your Swedish Student
Union card. Unlike the MDH student card, this
one is your key to money saving offers.
Not only do you get reduced prices when taking part in
International Committee events you also get reduced
prices at Kåren.
But it is not just at the university that you
will can reap the benifits. Once you have your card
you can also buy student price train
tickets, entry in many of the town's night clubs, and
cinema tickets, plus much much more!
International Students also recive a
free simcard when they pay the student union fee
in Västerås.
It costs just 200sek to join
the student union for a whole term. By joining you are
giving yourself the benifit of recieving great student offers, as
well as supporting the people who are supporting you during your
time here at Mälardarlens Högskola.
You can pay your union fee at the service desks in both
Västerås and Eskilstuna's Kår houses, or through the website
www.karen.nu
Eskilstuna on Tuesdays between 11:30 and 13:30
Västerås on Thursdays between 111:30 and 13:30.
