The Student Union or Student Kåren
The Student Union, or Student Kåren is a central part of university life in Sweden. There is a long history of student politics and the union has the ability to influence in the school environment and in other areas of life. They provide a variety of valuable services for students, both socially and professionally.

International Committee T-shirts 100kr
An International Committee T-shirt can be kept pristine clean and used for special occasions. You can also use it as an alternative to a Swedish overall, sew on some random patches, personalise with a nickname and never, ever, EVER wash it!

What to do in Sweden?!?
The International Committee arranges regular activities in and around Mälardalens. It might be a group meeting in the pub, a karaoke night, a museum visit or a trip to Finnish Lappland!
Information about activities is sent to international student mail addresses - be sure to check yours regularly! If you do not receive event information please send a mail to international@mds.mdh.se asking to be added to the mailing list.

Västerås is Sweden's sixth largest city, and the capital of the country Västmanland. With a poplualtion of 130,000 it may be a hustling hub of city life, but there is a wealth of things to do!

Things to do in Eskilstuna
The city of Eskilstuna is the seat of Eskilstuna Municipality Södermanland, Sweden. The town is located on the River Eskilstunaån, which connects Lake Hjälmaren and Lake Mälaren.

Kåren - the student's pub in Västerås
The Student Union’s pub in Västerås, or Kåren, is a small pub inside the student union building run by the students. You can meet many international and Swedish students here during the day - espcecially at lunch time. Kårpuben is also open Wedensday - Friday nights.

How to get around in Mälardalen
Bikes are the most popular mode of transport here. They are faster than walking and the cheapest, most convenient way to get to different places in small cities. But during the winter months, and for longer journeys, it is good to know how the public transport system works!

They are the cheapest alternative for broadband services in Västerås, and when you sign up for their internet service you'll most probably have internet access in your apartment the same day.

Alcohol and Tobacco in Sweden (the basics)
Sweden has a very different alcohol culture, especially compared to Southern European countries. Here you can only by strong alcohol in one shop. Alcohol is also considerably expensive compared with many other countries. Tobacco, although more easily available, is highly taxed, and may only be bought by over 18s.

The overall or "Ovve"
The overall or ovve has been a part of the Swedish and Finnish student culture since the early 1980s. Almost every education program has it's own student association and although most associations have coloured overalls, in Mälardalen it is engineers, scientists, and teachers who wear theirs most dilligently.
